Church of the Assumption of the Virgin

It is a three-aisled basilica built in 1835 and it is also the cemeterial church of the Portianou village. It is located in front of the Portianos Military Cemetery and some funerals of Australians, New Zealanders and Britons might have taken place in 1915.

In the center of the Portianos cemetery, a large pine tree is dominated, and there is a monument in the vicinity for four sailors of the warship HMS Endymion, who were killed in service in 1918. It has the shape of a four-sided column and its top is crowned by an anchor tied with a rope to a cross.

In early April 1915, a French army camp was set up in the area of the village of Lychna, housing colonial troops from Senegal (57th Infantry Regiment) and the second French hospital on the island. For the water supply of the camp and the hospital, the French built an aqueduct on the hillside, and they also evacuated the camp and left for Egypt on December 22, 1915.
